Mission

The Mission of the Network is to encourage, foster, and stimulate the education and development of commerce and entrepreneurship in the Black Belt.

Background

This Incubator Network will stimulate and promote workforce development, community partnerships and economic growth throughout Alabama’s Black Belt, which was originally named for its thin layer of exceptionally fertile black soil which encouraged cotton farming in the pioneer period of Alabama history. The region now includes the poorest counties in Alabama and the United States.

The Black Belt Region is burdened with an environment that results in a wide range of social, economic, cultural, health, political, and physical ills. There is a great need for education, training, resources, and business support in our county, as a result.

Business incubators are a crucial part of economic development for communities that are working to improve their economies and quality of life. Incubators are an economic support tool designed to foster the growth of entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses.

Benefits

The Development Center will provide the following benefits:

  • Grow and strengthen our relationships with current and potential Economic Development and Chambers of Commerce Partners.
  • Share in resources, best practices, knowledge, responsibilities, assets, among others
  • Achieve new solutions, innovations in thinking, regional and local recognition, and a new brand
  • Increase state and federal grant opportunities and amount of funding
  • Provide training and workshop space
  • Promote entrepreneurship and economic development on a local and regional level
  • Increase the City of Livingston and Sumter County’s revenue that can be reinvested in other economic and community development projects

The partnership is beneficial to all entities included as well as the communities and counties served by each agency, and the future possibilities for partnership in West Alabama.
